Catechism Thursday

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on September 27, 2007

What is the misery of that estate whereunto man fell?

All mankind, by their fall lost communion with God, are under His wrath and curse, and so made liable to all the miseries of this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell forever.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
(Genesis 3:8 ESV)

He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
(Genesis 3:24 ESV)

among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
(Ephesians 2:3 ESV)

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
(Galatians 3:10 ESV)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:23 ESV)

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
(Matthew 25:41-46 ESV)

The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.
(Psalms 9:17 ESV)

Whew too many Doctor’s visits…

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on September 24, 2007

So there was no catechism post well that means two this week starting with today.

Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate whereunto man fell?

The sinfulness of that estate whereunto man fell, consists in the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the want of original righteousness, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called original sin, together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it.

For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

(Romans 5:19 ESV)

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1 ESV)

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6 ESV)

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. (Psalms 51:5 ESV)

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. (Matthew 15:19 ESV)

Just for fun

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on September 17, 2007

Okay I admit it I am a bit of a Batman fan.  In fact as a boy I cracked my ribs playing Batman.  Much to the disgust of my Father.  I had taken a sheet my Mother no longer wanted and had made a parachute out of it.  I then crammed it under the seat of my bike.  I would then ride as hard as I could and pull a string so that the parachute would then snap out behind me just  like the 1960’s Batman’s.  Well, one day the chute snapped out when I didn’t expect it,  I flew over the handle bars and did a swan dive right onto the curb landing on my ribs.  Oh the crying and weeping Dad took me to the doctor who pronounced that I had cracked my rib cage.  There was nothing for it but to let it heal by itself.   All the way home my Dad would mutter Batman, Batman.

So it was with great delight that I followed the link that pilgrim provided to here:  Batman’s Friends.  Ah the memories.

Its been a long week…

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on September 15, 2007

And I am about to violate the cardinal rule of blogdom I’m going to write about myself.  Now if panic settles upon you at those words don’t worry you can skip down to the bottom and read the catechism lesson for this week which I wasn’t able to get up this Thursday.

So I’ve been having seizures three of them in fact and the last one, Wednesday, was the worst: a grand mal that lasted for fifteen minutes prompting my dear wife to once again summon the ambulance and take me to the hospital.  Where I went through the usual blood tests

There they found out that the drug of choice was too low in my blood for any therapeutic value.  So they decided to up my dosage and hang a bag of the stuff to bring my level up to what it should be.

Now I love this stuff it has the added benefit of making me loose my equilibrium so I walk around with a cane just to keep myself balanced.  The three legged stool principle you see.  All of this contributed to me being away from the computer and not getting the lesson up.  But to rectify that situation:

Catechism Lesson

Into what estate did the fall bring mankind?

The fall brought mankind into an estate of sin and misery.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. (Psalms 51:5 ESV)

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:18-19 ESV)

We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (Isaiah 64:6 ESV)

Catechism Thursday…

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on September 6, 2007

Did all mankind fall in Adam’s first transgression?
The covenant being made with Adam, not only for himself but for his posterity, all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first transgression.

For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 1Co 15:21 ESV

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1Co 15:22 ESV

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned–
(Rom 5:12 ESV)

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
(Rom 5:18 ESV)

For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
(Rom 5:19 ESV)
