The Church of Google

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 30, 2008

So I was going through my geek mail and I came across this little article: Geekend: Is Google a god?  Seems some enterprising young geek by the name of Matt Macpherson decided to start worshipping a search engine.  Of course in their link Arguments they state this:

How can you worship a search engine over Jesus Christ/Allah/Zeus/Spaghetti Monster/Whatever? It’s just a computer program!

We will answer your question with another similar question. Why do you choose to worship your god over other gods? Think about it. The same amount of anecdotal evidence exists for all supernatural gods. You cannot directly experience them, they all require faith, have holy books associated with them (all claiming to be the word of god) and generally believers of these gods describe a “feeling” that their god is watching over them.
Believers in all supernatural gods describe the exact same experiences and feelings without exception. Your god is in no way different than any other supernatural god. You believe in it simply for the comfort it provides you with, despite it being completely illogical. It is a psychological tool you use to cope with reality.

Again no different that many arguments used by atheists.  Ultimately all they do is prove what the Bible teaches about the nature of man when the truth of God is revealed:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
(Romans 1:18-23 ESV)

So let’s pray the young Macpherson and any of the others that may have decided to join this cult (whether in jest or for other reasons) may be enlightened by the Word of God have their hearts of stone removed and given hearts of flesh. So that they may know the true God and His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Warning

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 24, 2008

Every so often its good to give fair warning:

The writings on this blog are not the opinions, statements, views, beliefs, feelings, judgments, legal opinion, values, notions, persuasions, rulings, sentiments, thoughts, words, or deeds of anyone but the owner of this blog. They do not reflect the opinions, statements, views, beliefs, feelings, judgments, legal opinion, values, notions, persuasions, rulings, sentiments, thoughts, words, or deeds of his employer, church, pastor, wife, children, near or far relatives, close friends, bosom companions, workers, indigent natives, neighbors, or enemies.

If you are appalled, breached, broken, bruised, battered, hurt, infracted, injured, offended, outraged, pained, piqued, scandalized, shocked, spited, transgressed, violated, or wounded easily by writings that question or challenge your deep set weltanschauung, orientations, paradigm, presuppositions, perceptions, or views, then stop now! Leave! If you continue on it will be at your own risk and by your own choice that is uncoerced by any external forces not the least of which being the writings on this blog.

Continuing on will expose the reader to sardonic humor, the proclivity toward paronomasia, and satire. Bamboozled befuddlement can and will occur upon a moment’s notice. Those without a sense of wit or humor may be flummoxed and aghast: you should depart now, before further trauma is applied to your psyche. For if you continue, I, like that motley fool, shall gibe and gambol to your melancholy Dane and laugh in derisive manner at your discomfort.

You are the cause of any further calumny upon yourself unless you leave now.

In a sober mien I oft times ponder upon the Christian theology of the Protestant sort. If you prefer to have your theology spoon fed to you by professional theologians then this isn’t where you should be for mine is the rhetoric of the semi-educated laity. Also since my proclivities are toward a more conservative nature you won’t read anything that smacks of neo-evangelicalism, emergent, or any King-James-Only fundamentalist writings. I hold to those Particular Baptists who recognized the fruits of the Reformation and sought to be true reformers. It is the old truths not the new truths that I cling to and look with a jaundiced eye upon those that seek to forge a path not trod before by the stalwarts of our faith.

Your inauspicious inquisitiveness has served you ill for you have come to the end of my little admonition. If you have indeed been appalled, breached, broken, bruised, battered, hurt, infracted, injured, offended, outraged, pained, piqued, scandalized, shocked, spited, transgressed, violated, or wounded you have none to blame but yourself and I bid you goodbye.

Motivational Screen Saver for the Emerging Chaos

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 21, 2008

Every so often I get laid up by one thing of the other.  This usually frees me from my mundane work to work on my various projects at home.  Some of which is software.  So where is this going, well a while back I asked Phil Johnson of Team Pyro for permission to use all of his Emergent-See Po-Motivators posters as the makings of a screen saver.  And Phil kindly granted me permission.  So it’s done.  its all made and ready to give out for free.  I have one problem.  My current provider limits my uploads to 8 megs and well with the installation package and all this exceeds my limit.  They’ve also gone to be an exclusive IE design so my FTP program really doesn’t like that and I can’t stay connected.  But that is beside the point.

Point is I’m looking for a file share site that is free.  So I can upload this file and have a link pointing back to it.  If one of you kind readers know of such a place let me know and the screen saver will then be available.

End the Suspense

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 17, 2008

Dan J. Phillips has pointed me to a link that has the basic political questions for the candidates.  I took the test and I didn’t like the answer.  This is going to make me examine what I think should be done and what the candidate I’ve chosen to support thinks.  I hate politics.

End the Suspense

Stuff and things…

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 15, 2008

So the other weekend I took the wife out for some little shopping and a dinner out. You know the things husbands are suppose to do to keep the relationship fresh, vibrant, and alive. Which hasn’t been happening lately because I’ve been focused in on work all the time. So we are in the mall and we come across a “Christian” T-Shirt shop . It has all the commercial t-shirts in it. The Jesus Christ is the real thing in Coca Cola letters. A shirt with a giant white guitar pick one it with the slogan “Pick Jesus”. And I get that gleam in my eye that my wife hates. I mean I’m not going to start turning over tables or anything but I am going to start picking the clerk’s brain. So I look at my wife and say: “Honey, lets stop in here.” She gives me that warning look, I’ve embarrassed her before by “picking” on poor helpless clerks. But I manage to pull off an innocent demeanor and we walk in.

Well we spend a few moments looking at the “Christian” goods and then I discover you can make your own t-shirt. My joy is complete. I look at the young lady behind the counter and ask her if she could print me up a t-shirt with the five solas on it. Blank stare. I repeat the question and then add the “of the Reformation” with it. Same stare. Finally she looks at me and says: “If I can google it I can print it for you.” We have a winner folks now will she go on to the 64 dollar question? Well as matter of fact she does. As she is asking me the correct spelling of the phrase she asks me what denomination I am. Protestant, I reply. Another blank look. I look at her and ask where does she go to church. She mentions a non-denominational church just down the road from me.

Well, says I then your Protestant too. Again the blank stare. I inform her that if she isn’t attending the local RCC or Orthodox church than she is a Protestant. Someone who base their beliefs upon scripture. At this point I’m having trouble reading her expression I can’t tell if it’s ennui or just disinterest. I mention Martin Luther, I mean its only been five years since the movie Luther came out maybe just maybe that brings a spark of awareness. Nope, the curtains are closing the brain is shutting down, all conversation has ceased except for asking me what kind of font I want on my t-shirt. I pay for the t-shirt and leave my wife gives me a consoling look and I try not to weep for the future.

Catechism for January

Posted by Peculiar Baptist on January 14, 2008

Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?

God, out of His mere good pleasure, from all eternity, having chosen a people to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation, by a Redeemer.

(Eph. 1:3,4; 2 Thess. 2:13; Rom. 5:21; Acts 13:8; Jer. 31:33)
